Drug Sniffing Dogs On The Prowl In Traverse City

Recommended Posts

At last night's meeting of the Grand Traverse Compassionate Connection in Traverse City two people recounted similar stories that had happened to them in the past few weeks.

In both stories, a person was driving down a main road in T.C., and then notices that a police car is following them. The police car might stay behind the person's car for a while, then move away, then back. Eventually the driver stops somewhere or the lights come on and the driver is stopped. The cop says (both times) that the stop occurred because the dog in the back seat alerted to the smell of marijuana. Neither person was smoking at the time. Both people ended up fine, with no arrests or other complications.

I hadn't ever thought of this possibility, and it's a bit worrisome for me. I'm legal, but still not eager for the hassle as I'm delivering meds to patients.

Be careful out there!

Mason jars...real ones

and lockem down tight

If you are used to the smell....you wont smell it

Be aware...clothes...hair...everything can reek for hour or so

Depends how you use it of course vapes one-hits...pipes w/lids ect. smell less

Big rediculus spliff joints and blunts will reek for 3 weeks in your car... any sort of half burnt herb will reek bigtime

Yeah...back in the good ole days people seemed to smoke in the car all the time no worries...now never

But even the herb itself can be so pungent it can go through walls

mason jars...inside of another bag of some sort should do ...

While I have no doubt about the noses on these wonderful animals, I am curious as to how they alerted to a particular MOVING vehicle, and how or why a Canine Escort Person would be paying attention to such an alert while they themselves were driving....

Something just don't add up, at least to my cynical side.

Cars and people are 'profiled' by LEO.

If they have a dog in the car they''ll use a fictitious 'alert' by the dog as 'cause' to make a 'stop'.

LEO will use what ever they can to 'bypass' certain rules and laws... they've been doing it for years.

You have to stay alert and try not to 'set yourself up' for a shake down or a bust.

My dad was stopped once for a rear license plate light being out (other one fully lit the plate, but one was out. He was on his way to work and driving below the speed limit because of traffic.

Cop pulled him over and stuck his head in the car and gave a big sniff.

Cop was probably hoping to smell pot or booze (dad didn't smoke and didn't drink and drive, especially on his way into work). Funny thing was, my dad's truck always had this funky oil smell (machine operator). If you weren't used to it, it smelled so gross. Serves the cop right.

But anyway, cops will grasp at straws for probable cause.

dogs noses are on an order of magnitude *thousands* of times stronger than ours. think about that for a minute. ill darn well put money on the fact that they could smell it from in the cop car - that is if you had some skunky bunny muffin in a plastic bag.

get some real, rubber sealed MASON JARS to store your medicine in, they are 100% air tight = no smell whatsoever.

A dog can not just alert from the air. They will follow a sent in the air and they will try to get to their toy, which is what an alert is. A dog does not say "I smell drugs", they are trained to play with drug scented toys. So a drug dog is just trying to have fun. The cop is using a bogus excuse. Hopefully he will run into the wrong person who well stop this unlawful activity. It should not hold up in court, but with today's justice who knows.

If a drug dog alerts in the back seat he is probably exited about a squirrel or something visual.

I generally keep my stuff in mason jars, in a bag in the trunk. After driving for a few hours I can almost smell it inside the vehicle. I can definitely smell it when I open the trunk. Vacuum or heat sealed mason jars would work much better, but just hand tightening the lid doesn't work for some of my strains.

That made me think this could be a plausible story, although I suppose it's possible it was just two similar cases of profiling.

I heard it was illegal for them to pull you over if they have been following you for more than 2 miles. Not sure if true or not.

Not true at all. As long as the cop has legal cause to pull you over, it doesn't matter if they followed you from Mackinaw to Lansing. The moment you forget to use a turn signal or roll a stop sign, they can hit the lights.

Go to this webpage and read up on as much as you can. This guy is a former drug agent and tells you many usefull tools on how to avoid getting busted. If this story is true about getting pulled over because the dogs alerted them that is false and very sad that someone would just take that. That smell could be coming from anywhere, (if the dog even smelled anything) which i highly doubt...........if it is serious and you need legal help, go to this website and contact barry cooper (his contact details are right on the website) and he was a former drug dog handler. He will testify in court if you need his help. Not sure what he charges. He is a expert dog handler and im sure if you told him your story he would be more than happy to come testify on yoru behalf. I am almost a hundred percent sure what they did was illegal.

This is the way to fix that....get a plastic or seal-able container to put the jars in that protects them from light and keep them on the DL hopefully takes care of any escaped odor

Sometimes people dont realize they can crank the lid of a mason jar pretty hard...its closes then one more hard crank you can feel it lock

But absolutely...airtight or not...nothing is bullet proof but two layers the jar then in another sealed container or bin would help....I know just what you mean

Some of the stuff reeks like some raw monkey dodoo.... whooohoo! :sword:

Dogs CAN smell but have no idea what to do. They are simply excuses. I cant tell you how many time I had a BURNT ROACH in my pocket while petting the "drug dogs". Bags of weed.... They dont know unless they are told to "hit". It is seriously BS to freak people out. I am talking about the top dogs. No some local LEO dog. Total BS.
