Renewal Questions

Recommended Posts

My husband will be up for renewal this summer and I have some questions/concerns when deciding if he should renew or not.

Does he have to go to the same doctor that he originally visited ??

Is the process the same for renewing as it was for originally applying? (not the doctor visit itself, but as far as the application process and the MDCH)

Well stated Danny, but Northern is welcome to go where she wants. The state will require a new application (renewal applications are the same as initial, but there is a spot to put your registration number- make sure you have the right form). You will need a new physician certification, new caregiver attestation, and a payment to the state (same amount as your initial unless there has been a change in SSI/SSD or MC). Turn around on renewals is pretty quick, about 3-4 weeks.

Learned a little trick of the system.

If you apply for a card, it goes through the system and takes months. IF you then send in a copy of your cashed check, application, and a change form a week later, you are put into a different pile, and the change form is processed the same day and you are issued a card. Or so I am told. Be interested if it works.

Thank you all!! I appreciate the responses.

Phaq- My hubby did see Dr. Bob T. for his original rec. That was the only doctor I ever personally took any family/aquaintances to! I was just worried due to all the B.S. with my hubbys records being possessed by the "Neon Card sending Card Mill" that we would be forced to use them for recertification. If that were the case, there would be no reason to get recertified!!

Dr. Bob - Although you do not possess his original records, you were the signature on the application. Am I right in assuming that it dosen't truly matter that you don't have the original records used when first certifying? He would be bringing in his records for this past year anyhow, not the same records we used previously. (He visits his surgical specialists monthly, so updated records are never a problem) We would not need those original chart notes/records that originally certified him as long as the current records support a qualifying condition....Is that correct?

If I did the original cert, by definition he was qualified based on records. To renew he will need his old card/paperwork and one additional note from the last year to show the condition is ongoing. Legal action is pending to shut the mill down and retrieve the records.

Can I safely assume that as long as we send the renewal in 30 days before expiration of his card there will not be a "lapse" in him being "registered".

Again, correct that 30 days beforehand would work [unless his renewal gets denied on typical grounds like a typo leading to an erroneous SSN or driver license number. If so they'd notify you and you could correct that then reapply]. But don't wait too long to reapply or your ID card will expire before your renewal review period is over.

Importantly, folks should know that there is no grace period regarding renewal status dates. Meaning? You could get caught having meds and an -expired- ID card on you, and you think "it's cool, I sent in my renewal app a week before my card expires so I'm good." But bummer no, not good. Your renewal app. hasn't completed its 20-day cycle the state gets for renewals, just like with new applications. No overlapping coverage, no grace period before expiration. A MMMP ID card expires on the date printed. So now everyone, turn in and get -dated proof- like a Post Office Certified Mail receipt proving when you sent your renewal app. I also recommend paying for a USPS Signature Return Card to receive back to yourself a signed, dated "RECEIVED" stamp to staple to your renewal app copy. Just checking... you DID keep a copy of your renewal app before mailing it, right? And you will print a copy of the -cashed personal check- sent as fee payment and staple it on too? Awesome. You have medical needs and a legal right to relief via herbal therapy. Keep it legal and stay safe out there.

I am going to add my 2 cents on this NorthernGal.. the renewals are not going quicker.. I would suggest everyone get their recert in the mail as soon as they possibly can.. Like going to the dr. Three months to the day before your expiration date and putting it in the mail asap. the Drs signature must be within three months of your expire date.. so you cant go 3 months and a day to the dr.. It has to be within three months.. but i just got my card in the mail from a recert that was sent in the end of July.. That took 3.5 months.. Dont wait on this ppl..

I would think your new paperwork, copy of new cashed check, and old hard card would be valid proof, so im not gonna worry anymore about how long the State takes. They suck at their job, and there is nothing we can do about it.

Im waiting for mine and 4 other patients renewal right now, trust me, Im not holding my breath, when it gets here it gets here, LOL!

Just remembered something else.....

Send it in at least 30 days before to be safe but not more than 60 days early. Several people I know sent it in too soon and they sent it back. I waited waited till mine was 45 days out and mailed it in with no problems.

Everyday as a patient i read the site and have one more item to worry about . Now its sending in my app at least 21 days before expiration unlike any other renewal or my taxes . Scary since many of us have disabillities that make it hard to follow instructions or remember items . When I read the actual act with the belief it is to protect patients in every case it sure interprets different then it is working in practice . It is apparent not only do many officials and courts not like it they do not want to comply in good faith effecting our care . Good advice though on the 21 days . Should be able to send it in anytime after the 90 days you would think but I will try to remember the 60 day bookend too .

I agree with you on the sending it in early. My family doctor signs my paperwork. So on my regular visit I brought my renewal paperwork and had him sign it at the same time. Not wanting to forget about mailing it in I thought I would just send it in right away. But when I check I found about them not accepting them more than 60 days out. Darn cards are only good for 6 months anyway by the time you get them. You would think being early would be helpful. Maybe they would be good for 8 months then. lol

As a terrible patient, I let my card expire in April and am now looking to get a renewal. Is a renewal an option at this point or do I need to start the process over again? Also I am wondering as far as medical records go, does it depend on the doctor what is needed or is it the past year no matter what? I've had some new issues turn up, but I'm having trouble getting records because I've asked for so many due to pending SSI and DHS appointments. I don't have the funds to pay for a full year's records if they're priced per page.

I hate that I've let this slip and I've not put my caregiver in any bad situations because I've been trying to get renewed here and there, but don't want my cg to have any legal issues/concerns.

So, riddle me this...what do I need to do to get renewed after letting a card expire so long ago? I'd like to get this done ASAP before any laws change and before my pain worsens than it has.

Thanks for any help on this matter. I feel I should be grounded/wearing a dunce cap for making such an enormous error in judgement.

Please feel free to email me with any answers or advice.

Signed, Very Concerned Patient

p.s. I am looking for a physician for my renewal....please. I'm in West Michigan if that helps.

You will definetly have to send in a NEW application not a renewal. Hopefully your cg does not have

any meds or plants in your name. If he does you have definetly put him at risk and he has put himself

at risk. If not then no harm no foul. As far as records go it depends on the doctor certifying. Good luck

to you.

  • 2 months later...

I'm a cg and my wife is a pt. Our cards need renewing. The only renewal form I've found is "Renewal Application Form For Registry Indentification Card". The only cg info required is in Section B. If I fill sec. B out , she just needs to fill out the rest of this form right ? So for me as a cg all I need do is add a Caregiver Attestation and a copy of caregivers photo indentification and send it in with my wife paperwork to be renewed.?
