Hospital Is Thwarting Doctors' Efforts!

Recommended Posts

I have had my card for almost a year and it was certified by my family doctor right here in my mid-michigan hometown. When I asked my doctor to sign my renewal form--he stated that as a hospital staff member, he was no longer allowed to participate, along with all the doctors who are on staff there. This makes it very difficult for me now, with a serious medical condition and no doctor to go to nearby. What am I supposed to do now? Does anyone know a doctor in mid-michigan that would see me, and is not on the local hospital staff??? And what is with the hospital, who is supposed to help people in need? I hope someone who reads this can give me some guidance. Thanks in advance. MaryMary

This is horribly backward thinking by this hospital, imo, and I'm surprised the physicians don't have enough clout to fight it. Trying not to be instrusive, but may I inquire which hospital it is?

I hesitiate to name the hospital because I don't want to cause any problems with my dr. and confidentiality. I found in my research yesterday, that a Compassion Club in Lansing has a clinic with a visiting dr. I hope to get an appt. there and keep my primary care physician. I would see the other dr. as a specialist for dealing with my chronic illness. Other specialists give up on you when you want to stop the drug therapies. I just couldn't handle the side-effects any longer and quit all the drugs. MM is the only relief I can get now, besides dietary therapies. My current dr. is my only physician now.

I wonder who or what is behind the hospital's recent demand over staff physicians in their own practices...and if other hospitals will circulate this same order in the form of a memo? And I do want to help advance the acceptance of this therapy in the community, I'm just not sure how. I feel like this is a good way to get started on a local level, just talking it over with other more experienced people. Thanks for any input you have for me and others in this situation.

The Capitol City Compassion Club! If not, at least go check

Good luck and

Yes, that's the one I came across, and will be going there for my renewal. Thanks for the affirmation.

Unfortunately, there are many caring health care professionls that work at hospitals that are unable to do certifications due to hospital policy. If a hospital or clinic receives federal money/funding they have had to make this policy. It makes it difficult to get the certification but there are doctor's that will work with you. We see many patients, are located in Saginaw MI but do travel north and will try to make ourselves available to those communities without other options. Please call Mid-Michigan's Medical Marijuana Rx for information. Our doctor will meet with each patient on a one on one basis. For many, it's the only time they can sit and ask questions, talk about their medical concerns and conditions and get answers. We are happy to help. 989-332-4881. Thanks,

Joey

  • 4 weeks later...

Any Doctor in the Spectrum Health System have been ordered to not get involved with MMM and if they do they would be asked to leave the system. It is supposably only a moratorium till proper dispersement facilities are in place but I don't think it will change any time soon do to who owns Spectum Health System. Insurance companies diswade Doctors do to the lack of proper dispersement facilities (pharmacies)hopefully this will change.

Thanks for the answers I've been wondering about. I found a doctor in Lansing with the Captal City Compassion Club. He was very nice and showed great concern, and is making a living helping others.

Is it just me or is it the Doctors of Osteopathic medicine are the ones who are more open to MM than the M.D.'s???? Every doctor in my neck of the woods is a D.O. that does the certifications. I have not found one M.D. who will even see you let alone keep you as a patient if they find out or do certifications.

Well one of the mottos of the Osteopathic profession is that 'We DO care!' and that is what the DO stands for.

In just a short defense of doctors and hospital refusing to do certs, you have to understand that there are basically 3 types of docs. Those that support and participate in the program like me, those that like the idea but don't want to be involved or who are barred from participation because of policy/federal issues (which is where I come in, keep it at arm's length), and those that simply don't like it (hey there are folks that don't like the Tigers either, to each his/her own).

Another important factor that many don't consider is that the primary doc may not want the insurance companies and state to know they do the certs, and don't want them to know the patient has a card. This is to keep the matter away from the insurance companies and protects both the doc and the patient. Finally, there is the issue of having to go to a non-insurance based practice to get the card, which adds a little screening to marginal cases. Most clinics that do certs have a mechanism in place to make sure that no one that qualifies and really needs the card is turned away for financial reasons. Most MMJ clinics are in the business to help folks, not just sign and run to the bank.

So in reality, even if you doc can't do the cert, we can and if you are interested in organizing a clinic, drop me a line.
