a jewelers loop will work for checking trich's (20X)

I picked up one for $8 on ebay, I also got a hand held 60x - 100x microscope with light for $20.

i use the loop to look at trich's without having to remove a leaf, hard to do that with the microscope.

for the money, radio shack carries a good 60-100x w/ light.

a little more complicated to use than a 30x jewelers loupe...not much though.... and you may have a radio shack right around the corner :)

they are 12.49 i believe.

yup, here they are.

30x seems the right magnification, higher magnification means more shake.

I also suggest the ones with lighting - the light to adjust under the microscope.

Got mine for $17.

You can cut off a section of a leaf and examine on a table top to check the trichromes until you get better at checking them on the plant.

I really want to get the camera/microscope for my laptop - then I can also save the image!

I have an old Radio Shack model, 30x, looks just like the new ones except it has a small magnifying glass that pulls out of the back of it. It's about 5-6x and it is the bunny muffin. Kinda like one of those small jewlers loups. I like to use it to check that my all my spiders mites are dead after a neem application. You can see the trichs really well too with it

I like this one WAYYYYY better than the radio shack model because it has an LED light and seems to be clearer.

I will admit that an LED would be nice. The LED will not burn out any time soon. The RS bulb is replaceable if you can find one that fits it.
