Ann Arbor Lab Tests And Grades Marijuana On Potency And Purity

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (WJBK) - The marijuana testing conducted at an Ann Arbor lab is only happening in a handful of places in the country.

Longtime friends turned  partners Ben Rosman and Dr. Lev Spivak-Birndorf founded PSI Labs in Ann Arbor, where they test medical marijuana.

"A lot of people are using this for medicine right now very specific purposes and part of that is understanding the chemistry of the products they are getting," Spivak-Birndorf said.

Spivak-Birndorf said the U.S. is almost in the "bathtub gin" era of marijuana, where there is little regulation the composition.

The testing is similar to information on labels on beer brands. The labels state how much alcohol the consumer is ingesting. With marijuana, it's not as simple.

"Unless people have measured the chemistry, they are just taking someone's word for it," Spivak-Birndorf said.

At PSI Labs, each sample is tested and graded for potency and purity. Their customers are typically dispensaries or people who value consistency in their product.

"It's about getting what you pay for and also getting something that will get the job done," Spivak-Birndorf said.

Rosman said there is some risk in the legality of the lab testing.

"We do everything we can to stay within the legal limits as we see them," he said.

PSI Labs are pushing for more regulation when it comes to pot in Michigan, and said they're poised to capitalize if that happens.

"If there is mandatory testing, we have more customers," Rosman said.

So could a caregiver get into trouble for taking meds there & leaving it to be tested because the lab owners aren't my registered patients? "Grey Area"?

Absolutely they are not connected via the states registry but they are in Cannabis Utopia (AA) so things are much different in their area as far as enforcement.

Ok, this is directed to PSI, ACT, IRON, et al labs:

1. Are you're couriers MMMA card holders (Patients)?

2. Do the couriers carry the sample meds in a locked box in the trunk?

3. Do the couriers ever carry more than 2.5 oz at any one time?

4. Do your labs ever have more than 2.5 oz on site at any one time?

If the answer to 1 and 2 are NO, and YES to 3 and 4, then how in the hell do you get away with this when everyone else to would be arrested?

Those arent good questions to ask mike, i mean why try to make a mess? You can ask a grower all sorts of pragmatic questions just the same, with the same mess to come about. I dont even care why u asked, just dont. Come on now.

It is fair game to ask how they manage to navigate the economic imperatives of running a business (that has intensive start up costs), and the ability to keep those considerations separate from their ability to offer unbiased and untainted results... Where most of the other such businesses fail to do so, be it here or any of the other medi states...? How do we judge the integrity of the results?
